500 Families Receive Thanksgiving Meals From The Mount
CHESAPEAKE
On Saturday, November 19, 100 plus men gathered together at The Mount Cathedral Chesapeake. Their purpose was to help provide meals to those that struggle with hunger in our community this Thanksgiving. By carpooling through Hampton Roads and Elizabeth City, NC, 500 turkey dinner boxes were delivered to the doors of unexpected families.
Over the past three years the Mount Chesapeake and Mount Elizabeth City have partnered with the local Department of Social Services to supply meals to families during Thanksgiving. The VDSS provides Bishop Kim Brown with the names and addresses of those facing disparity. The entire fellowship comes together to help assist in making a difference in the lives of others.
The production began on Wednesday night during Bible study when the youth put together a total of 500 boxes. Then on Friday evening the women of the Mount placed all of the non-perishable foods in the boxes. Saturday morning, the men placed the turkeys in the boxes and seal them up. This effort is in partnership with Walmart. For the last three years, over $18,000 has been each year to make this all possible for residents of Virginia and North Carolina.
Eligible recipients are determined through the VDSS; the Mount does not control who will receive the special delivery.
Bishop Brown said the annual giveaway impacts the community in a positive way. “The faces …. are priceless,” he said in a recent press release. “The families are not even aware they will be receiving the box full of food.”
