VSU Freshman Enrollment Climbs 30 Percent
PETERSBURG
Virginia State University welcomed nearly 1,000 new freshmen to campus this fall. This is a 30 percent increase in freshman students compared to last year, according to a recent press release. The university also welcomed more than 40 new international students, also a historic record.
“We are excited to welcome our newest members to the Trojan family,” said VSU President Dr. Makola Abdullah. “It’s a new year and a new season for Virginia State University.”
Rodney Hall, executive director of Enrollment Services said, “I am thrilled so many students have chosen Virginia State University this year. These students were attracted to VSU’s dedication to the undergraduate learning experience and a faculty and staff dedicated to their success.”
Hall added, “We can credit this to a number of new creative initiatives across the board as well as the dedication and hard work of our admissions, financial aid and other departments university-wide.” According to the Richmond Times-Dispatch, Virginia State saw a sharp drop in enrollment during the spring 2015 school year. Interim President Pamela V. Hammond placed a freeze on hiring, restricted travel and purchases, and considered furloughs to make up for the revenue shortfall, estimated at between $2.1 million and $3.4 million.
In September 2014, enrollment dropped by 550 students, according to news reports. Virginia State closed residence halls, cut back its dining operation and curtailed maintenance, raising concerns about the state of the university.
