The Hampton NAACP’s 53rd Annual Life Membership Awards, held on October 19 at the Hampton Roads Convention Center, celebrated 19 distinguished individuals and organizations for their outstanding contributions to civil rights and community service.

HAMPTON
The Hampton branch of the NAACP hosted its 53rd Annual Life Membership Awards Celebration on Sunday (Oct. 19) at the Hampton Roads Convention Center. Rev. Dr. Jerome Barber, Sr., Pastor of Sixth Mount Zion Baptist Temple served as master of ceremonies. Hampton NAACP branch president Gaylene Kanoyton welcomed the audience and further greetings were extended by Congressman Bobby Scott and Hampton mayor Jimmy Gray. Musical selections were rendered by the Aberdeen Singers.
Gaylene Kanoyton presented Life Membership Plaques to Dr. Anthony Bradford, Dr. Rosiland McCoy Sibley, Melvin Ferebee, Judge Aundria Foster, Alphonso Fawlkes, Jocelyn Hawkins, Sharon Hawkins Griffin, Donna Little, Iris Lundy, Eulace D. Malloy, Sr., Goldie Myers, Dr. Danny Myers, Sandra Myers, Newport News Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Gisele Russell, Jeanette Walker, James Ward, Sr., World Victory Church and Life Center.
Former Richmond mayor and Sr. Pastor of First Baptist Church of South Richmond Rev. Dr. Dwight Jones gave the event’s keynote address. Democratic VA Attorney General Candidate Jay Jones rendered a few remarks after Kanoyton invited to the stage candidates seeking state-wide political office in November’s election.
The event closed out with the audience singing, “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
