VIRGINIA BEACH
The Virginia African-American Cultural Center hosted its 6th annual Community Fall Festival on Oct. 11 on the site of its future home in the Lake Edward neighborhood.
The day-long of free activities was highlighted by the honoring of two local icons: Minister Dr. Patricia Turner of Norfolk, civil rights pioneer who was one of 17 children to desegregate the Norfolk Public Schools; and Ed Joyner of Portsmouth, an international talent agent and promoter for the fine and performing arts for more than 65 years.
Fun-filled activities included stage performances that featured music, spoken word, dance, comedy, and more. Exhibitors and vendors were on hand to complete the day which began with the forecast of rain which was delayed until just before the festival closed.
Dr. Amelia Ross-Hammond, the VAACC’s founder and chairman, and members of the Board of Directors, community and civic leaders made a stop by the grounds to lend support.
The VAACC is an organization dedicated to building Virginia’s first African-American Cultural Center in the city of Virginia Beach.
