Randy’s Weekly Sports Report: Vick & Spartans Fall 41-34 To HU In Battle of Bay

New Norfolk State coach Michael Vick—making his Peninsula return—saw the Spartans squander a big early lead as Hampton rallied for a 41-34 victory in front of 9,710 fans in the 64th Battle of the Bay.

NSU head football coach Michael Vick, who is a Newport News native, and his Spartans were defeated by the Hampton University Pirates, 41-34, in Vick’s initial return to the Peninsula as a college coach on Saturday (Oct. 4) at Armstrong Field in front of 9,710 fans in the Battle of the Bay.

HU opened the scoring with a 39-yard field goal by Bret Sterling.  NSU QB Otto Kuhns engineered two scoring drives for the Spartans in the first quarter, hitting DreSean Kendrick for a 65-yard TD and Jaylen Laudermilk for a 9-yard TD, giving NSU a 41-3 lead. NSU running back Xzavion Evans scored on a 1-yard run to increase NSU’s lead to 21-10.

HU stormed back, taking advantage of NSU fumbles and interceptions, scoring touchdowns on runs by Gracen Goldsmith-30-yards, Marshawn Ferguson-14-yards, and Jahkei Chavis-4-yards, and a 25-yard field goal by Bret Sterling to take the lead 34-24 in the third quarter. NSU tight end Ikeem Wright caught a 18-yard TD pass from Kuhns in the fourth quarter to cut HU’s lead to 34-31.  HU’s Braden Davis extended HU’s lead and put the game out of reach with a 21-yard TD run to bring the score to 41-31.

NSU kicker Marco Peery booted a 29-yard field goal to close out the game, 41-34.
