Hull Leaves Morgan State

Lee Hull, who just completed his second year as head coach at Morgan State, confirmed Monday that he had resigned to become the wide receivers coach for the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts. Morgan State Athletic Director Floyd Kerr said Hull informed him of the decision “a couple of days ago.” Kerr announced that offensive coordinator Fred Farrior will serve as interim head coach.

Hull compiled an 11-12 overall record at MSU, and in his first year (2014) led the storied Morgan State program to a share of its first Mid Eastern Athletic Conference championship in 43 years and its first-ever Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) playoff berth. For his efforts, he was named MEAC Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the Eddie Robinson FCS Coach of the Year award. That team finished at 6-2 in conference play, tied with four others for the MEAC title and won the playoff berth by virtue of the best record vs. the other four. The team was 7-6 overall. This past season, the Bears finished 4-6 overall and tied for sixth with Norfolk State in the MEAC with a 4-4 mark.

Hull, 50, played wide receiver at Holy Cross and came to Morgan State after a six-year stint (2008-13) as wide receivers coach at Maryland. He also previously served as an assistant at Oregon State and Holy Cross. In Indianapolis, Hull replaces Jim Hostler.

Hull said Colts offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski reached out to him recently as a reference for another candidate and then asked Hull if he would be interested. Hull said he has known Chudzinski since interviewing with Chudzinski when he was the offensive coordinator with the Carolina Panthers from 2011 to 2012, and the two have kept in touch. Farrior was formerly a head coach at Kentucky State of the SIAC.
