Annual Symphony Tribute To Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Held At Calvary Revival

HAMPTON ROADS
The City of Norfolk and the Virginia Symphony Orchestra paid homage to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Sunday, January 17, 2016 at Calvary Revival Church in Norfolk.
Through the VSO’s Harmony Project Community Concert program and the City of Norfolk’s Neighbors Building Neighborhoods, the performance was free and open to the public.
During the event, the annual VSO Dreamer’s Award was presented to Lorraine Graves, a noted Norfolk native who established a national and international career as a ballerina, dance artist/choreographer and instructor.
In accepting the award, Ms. Graves shared some of her defining experiences as an African-American gaining fame and acceptance in a non-traditional setting.
The event’s finale featured 10 area pastors delivering a dramatic reading of the King speech during the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March. Following their reading, the symphony and the NSU Jazz Ensemble Choir collaborated on a rendition of the song “Glory” that was the theme of the movie “Selma.”
Under the leadership of GRAMMY-winning music director, JoAnn Falletta, the Virginia Symphony Orchestra is Virginia’s pre-eminent professional symphony orchestra with a mission of inspiring, educating and connecting audiences of all ages.
This concert was made possible in part by VSO Community Partnership Sponsor, The Norfolk Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and produced by Heritage Arts, a division of The True Good Companies, LLC.
