On March 20, this organization will host its fourth annual signature fundraising event in Hampton Roads online. More than 500 business, civic and education leaders are expected to participate in the annual fundraiser, which in 2020 generated a record $250 thousand. The 2021 UNCF Hampton Roads Mayors’ Masked Ball’s honorary co-chairs are Alexis Swann, Towne Bank, and Dwayne Blake, Huntington Ingalls Industries.
The UNCF Masked Ball is held in several cities across the nation as the UNCF’s signature event to provide financial support to 37 historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and to honor community recipients.
For more than seven decades, UNCF has raised more than $5 billion and helped more than 500,000 students attend college, graduate and become leaders.
The UNCF Mayors’ Masked Ball Award has been given to several Hampton Roads community leaders over the past four years. A quick snapshot shows Norfolk Judge Jerrauld C. Jones, the presiding judge of the Virginia Circuit Court was a 2020 UNCF honoree. Other 2020 honorees included philanthropist Anne B. Shumadine (posthumous); Dr. Colita Nichols Fairfax, professor and Honors College Senior Faculty Fellow at Norfolk State University (NSU); and Edward L. Hamm, Jr., president and CEO of E.L. Hamm and Associates.
The Hampton Roads event is hosted by the Mayors of the seven-city area: Norfolk, Virginia Beach. Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Suffolk, Newport News, and Hampton.
