VCIC Presents Annual Humanitarian Awards To Community Members

HAMPTON ROADS
This 55th presentation of the 2019 Humanitarian Awards Dinner by the Tidewater Chapter of the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities (VCIC) was held on March 28, 2019, at The Westin Virginia Beach Town Center. The awards celebration honors individuals and organizations who have made significant humanitarian contributions to the South Hampton Roads community.
This year’s chair was Alvin A. Wall, a founding shareholder of Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer, P.C. (WEC) who has practiced in the area of taxation for more than 40 years. Wall received the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities Humanitarian Award in 2016.
This year’s awardees were Dr. Cassandra Newby-Alexander, Regina Darden, Patricia P. Wainger, Dr. Alok K. Verma, Rev. Kevin H. Turpin, and Claus Ihlemann.
The Humanitarian Awards are presented annually in communities across the Commonwealth by the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities. Begun in Tidewater in 1965, when the organization was part of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, the Humanitarian Awards honor individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of respect and understanding among people of diverse racial, ethnic, and religious backgrounds.
For 84 years, the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities has been addressing prejudices, in all forms, in order to improve academic achievement, increase workplace productivity, and enhance local trust. Today, through workshops, retreats, and customized programs, VCIC works with schools, businesses, and communities to achieve success through inclusion.
The organization opened a Hampton Roads office on the campus of Virginia Wesleyan University in October 2018.
