SunTrust Bank-NSU Partnership Identifies Resources For Students

At least 3,000 prospective college students are expected to attend a scholarship fair that will be held at Norfolk State University on Oct. 21 and 22 from 12 p.m.-5 p.m., in Joseph G. Echols Memorial Hall.

Students and parents from across the state are expected to attend the event. Sun Trust Foundation and Scholarship Sharing, a non-profit in Richmond launched by a group of students in 2013, partnered with Norfolk State to help parents and students identify resources for college.

In addition to walking away from the free, two-day event with scholarship and financial aid opportunities, students can also walk away with a complimentary head shot, which a photographer will provide free. Students can use the professional photo on their portfolio. The event is open to adult learners, high school, undergraduate, and graduate students.

Mark Johnson, Sun Trust vice president, community development manager, said, “We worked with Scholarship Sharing and Norfolk State during the past six to 12 months to make this happen. Sun Trust decided to get involved because the financing of college aligns with our purpose of finding a way to finance the well-being of students and their families. What we hope the impact of this event will be is that it will help students.”

Johnson said students can also register to win the Sun Trust Off to College Scholarship Sweepstakes. Two students will be chosen every two weeks at random for a $500 scholarship beginning on Oct. 30. You can enter the contest now (suntrust.com/offtocollege). Winners will be randomly chosen from Oct. 30-May 14.

“We look forward to helping students and their families identify resources that would assist in financing college for them and their families,” Johnson added. “We hope this event will help students and their families locate funding to attend college. We want to help students cover the cost of going to college.”

This is the fifth Scholarship and College Fair that Scholarship Sharing has held. This is the first one that has been held at Norfolk State.

“We hope to educate families,” said Lorraine Santaluchia, president and founder of Scholarship Sharing. “We started on campus on social media platforms with about 200 students. Now we serve thousands each year,” said Santaluchia who earned a degree in mass communications at Virginia Commonwealth University in 2014. She also holds a graduate certificate in non-profit management.

“We hope we will help more students and their families learn more about scholarship and financial aid opportunities,” Santaluchia said.
