South Side (C.L.E.A.N.) Honors Four Women

Early Saturday morning March 26th at Applebee’s off Virginia Beach Blvd., Norfolk, friends and family started to gather around 7:30 a.m. The occasion was to meet, have a Flapjack breakfast, and honor four of South Side’s loyal long time movers and shakers and outstanding community leaders. This fundraiser cost was a mere $10 to attend… that got you a short stack of two pancakes, sausage, eggs, and a cup of coffee or tea. South Side volunteers of the C.L.E.A.N. group took your order and served you when your order was ready. I think they must have had some practice because they did a great job catering to the guests.
Anthony “Jack” Daniels, the president of Citizens Learning and Educating About Neighborhoods (C.L.E.A.N.), and others spearheaded this March Women’s History Month affair. The organization froze this moment in time to honor four proud women who have never lost sight of the importance of serving a community and showing dedication to friends and individuals.
Who do you call when you know you are a little short on reaching your community’s needs, or in need of some good old fashioned advice?
Jack knows.
“To know these honorees is to know you are in capable hands and have access to a history of unmatched resources,” stated Jack, as he set the stage to present the honorees.
They were Anne Boone, of the Berkley Historical Society, Mrs. Donna Alexander, General Manager of Metropolitan Funeral Home, Jamie Golden, City of Norfolk Neighborhood Development Specialist, and Janice McKee, President, Campostella Civic League. Each honoree was given a few moments to reflect on her award, and each was also treated to a hand clapping ovation. Mrs. Alexander was represented by an able member of the Metropolitan team. The volunteers were recognized and applauded for their support, as well.
One of the goals set by C.L.E.A.N. this year is to sponsor 55 youth, ages twelve to eighteen, with a trip to Washington, D.C. The money collected from this and other fundraising methods will contribute toward their goal. The neighborhood youth are already excited and doing their part through volunteering. They already know their success could lead to a visit in the White House, not to mention bragging rights in the community.
When it was all said and done, it was a good tip day for the volunteers; C.L.E.A.N had a great turn out; and the honorees were appreciated.
