Rebecca’s Well: The Prophets Speak For God

By Dr. Rebecca R. Rivka

In the last article the prophet Joel spoke for God (2: 12- 17). In this article Peter, Jesus’ disciple, speaks as a prophet. “For the time is come that judgment must begin at the House of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the Gospel of God? And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? “ ( First Peter 4: 17-18)KJV So “ It’s judgment time for God’s own family. We are first in line. If it starts with us, think what it’s going to be like for those who refuse God’s message! If good people barely make it, what’s in store for the bad? (Message Study Bible)

Jeremiah, the Weeping Prophet of Israel cries,” Call for the mourning women, that they should take up a wailing for us, that our eyes and our eyelids gush out with waters. For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion … teach your daughters wailing, and everyone her neighbor lamentation. For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our places, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets.” (Jeremiah 9: 17-21)KJV

The Prophet Amos admonishes, “Woe to those that are at ease in Zion …”(6:1) Down through the centuries in days of rash unrighteousness, the Prophets of old have inquired of the Lord a pertinent word of intention for His people in times of declension and falling away. And the Lord has always said “Repent turn unto Me, and I will return unto you, saith the Lord of Hosts “( Malachi 3:7)

Habakkuk, the Watching Prophet, stood upon his watch and set upon the tower to hear God would say to him. Habakkuk says “ And the Lord answered me and said, “ Write the vision, and make plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. For the vision is yet for an appointed time, but at the end it shall speak, and not lie: though it tarry wait for it; because it will surely come, it will not tarry … meanwhile the just shall live by his faith.” (Habakkuk 2:1-20)KJV (note) The vision is Jesus. (Hebrews 10: 37-38) Here the “it” of the vision becomes “He” and refers to the return of the Lord Jesus. Habakkuk continues to speak. “O Lord, revive Thy work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make known; in wrath remember mercy” (3:2)

Lord please have mercy on us in America and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Lord send a revival and let it begin with me. Amen.
