May 30-June 7: Ready, Set, Go…Let’s Walk For Fitness

NORFOLK

The  inaugural walk of Walk Norfolk Week, an exercise campaign, kicks off May 30 to address alarming overweight and obesity rates in Hampton Roads. The walk grand marshal is former NFL great Greg Scott.

This special initiative is open to residents from throughout the region and encourages participants to walk the equivalent of the circumference of the City of Norfolk, some 40 miles, over 8 days, from May 30 thru June 7, 2015.

On May 30, a walk and wellness fair will be staged at the main Norfolk Public Health Center, 830 Southampton Avenue, intersection of Brambleton and Colley Avenues, Norfolk.  Scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., the health fair features an extensive list of free health screenings.  The inaugural walk begins at 11:00 a.m.  Interested persons can register online at www.norfolk.gov/walknorfolkweek.  Onsite registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

Sedley, VA native Scott played defensive lineman for both the Washington Redskins (2002–2003) and the Cincinnati Bengals (2003-2006).  He attended Hampton University (1998 – 2002) on an athletic scholarship and earned a number of accolades that led to his successful NFL career. After retirement Scott started a foundation that works with youth.

The Walk Norfolk Week inaugural walk is a brief, 0.98 mile walk in celebration of fitness.

Online registration for Walk Norfolk Week can be done at www.norfolk.gov/walknorfolkweek.  For further information, call 757-683-8836 or e-mail terrance.afer-anderson@vdh.virginia.gov.
