Local Teens Find a Place of Peace at Paradise Creek

Special To The New Journal and Guide

Trading in the buzzing of their cell phones for the sound of chirping birds, the campers at The Elizabeth River Project’s Place of Peace Camp learn about the environment, sustainability and life skills. Thanks to a $25,000 environmental grant from Dominion Energy, the camp was launched this summer to connect urban youth with nature and its healing powers.

This summer’s campers included students from Portsmouth Public schools. Many of them admit they don’t usually spend much time outdoors, and this camp gives them the opportunity to explore nature and discover it’s a peaceful place to learn, relax and have fun.

“Place of Peace Summer Camp is just the beginning of expanding the power of our urban park to change the lives of not only wildlife, but also the community,” said Marjorie Mayfield Jackson, Executive Director of the Elizabeth River Project.

The campers spend time exploring the Paradise Creek Nature Park where they see local wildlife and vegetation. They also play games and learn about the woods and wetlands around them.
