The Sheraton Imperial Hotel and Convention Center, in Durham, North Carolina, was the venue for the exciting weekend of the “Metro Retirees of North Carolina’s – Annual Reunion.”  From what was started as a backyard get together in Rocky Mount, North Carolina, a committee was formed, in 2006 known as the “Metro Retirees of North Carolina,” who brought together the group for the first reunion. Most of the participants are retirees of the Metro Transit System of Washington, DC and suburban Maryland which is headed by President Jackie Jeter and is under the auspices of local 689 Union which consist of 11,000 members. This group, of fun loving retirees and their guest, has grown to over 800 participants which included guest Coley and Leona Brewer Faulk of Norfolk, Virginia.

Three days of fun, which was said to be like the “CIAA” hotel activities, included Line Dancing, Throwback Jam/Talent Show featuring the music by DJ Graham Cracker and DJ AI-V.  Saturday was a day of card playing and a pool partying culminating with a banquet.  The guest speaker, for the occasion, was the “Queen of Transit” Ms. Shirley DeLibero.  This African American woman started her career at the MBTA, in her native Boston, where she served as project manager rehabilitating old PCC cars and shortly moved up to Superintendent of the Green Line.  Through her 30 years in the transit system, Ms. DeLibero moved from Boston, with several major stops in  between, to Houston, Texas as President and CEO of Metro.  In 2004, this dynamic lady left the public sector to join the private sector with her own consulting company – DeLibero  Transportation Strategies LLC.  Ms. DeLibero was inducted into APTA’S Hall of Fame in 2006 and received, in 2007, The Sharon Banks Award for Innovative Leadership in Transportation  from The Transit Research Board.

This wonderful weekend ended with a Sunday morning Prayer Breakfast.  Many thanks and appreciation to the “Metro Retirees of North Carolina’s – Annual Reunion” members – Joel and Mattie Chappelle, Charles and Myfawneey Parker, George and Marian Taylor, JJ and Evelina Parrish, Ron and Barbara Smith and James and Cathy Robinson.
