Mrs. McCall started her career, 46 years ago, as confidential secretary to Dr. Lyman B. Brooks; worked in other academic arenas, on campus, and ended her tenure as assistant professor of English where she served, for 17 years, as faculty advisor to XI Nu Chapter of Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society. The Mississippi native, Mrs. Myrtis Thomas, graduated from Jackson State College (now Jackson State University) where she earned a bachelor of science degree and later a master of arts degree from Hampton Institute (now Hampton University). Mrs. Thomas worked in the Norfolk public schools, for 33 years, as a teacher, forensics coach and a reading in the content area specialist before beginning her 22 years of teaching at Norfolk State University.
Mr. Michael Cotter presided at the retirement celebration. Mrs. Dottie Perry welcomed the honorees and guest; Mr. Damani Drew gave the statement of the occasion; and Mrs. Linda Johnson prayed. After lunch, Miss Arianna Ingrid Shortridge was presented the 2012 Jocelyn Pretlow Goss Award.
Both of the honorees, Mrs. McCall and Mrs. Thomas gave farewell remarks. Dr. WaNelle Anderson and Mrs. Allison Kimnach made closing remarks.

2012 ACT NOW SYMPOSIUM
From June 21-24, 2012, young professionals, entrepreneurs and college students will converge, at the Norfolk Waterside Marriott, as they travel the road to empowering their generation. These young adults will be learning leadership skills, wealth building knowledge and will be gaining a renewed sense of taking an active role in the community from nationally known entrepreneurs, corporate executives and community leaders as they make this journey.
On Friday night, June 23, 2012, beginning a 8:00pm a Black Tie Gala will be held at the Westin Virginia Beach Town Center. The “O” Band will feature live music and a celebrity DJ will also play for the affair.
