“Men of God Called to Step Up” was the theme of the Men’s Day Celebration at Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church in Richmond, Virginia.  Rev. R. M. Hunter, pastor chose Coach Vaughan to be the Men’s Day speaker because of his many years of outstanding work with young men.  As professor, athletic director and head basketball coach at Elizabeth City State University, Professor Emeritus Vaughan helped to mold the lives of young men from the late 1940s to the early 2000s.

Charles Henderson served as liturgist and Gerald Ruffin was the guest organist.  The men’s chorus sang several songs including special musical selections “Falling in Love with Jesus,” and “Certainly Lord.”  Anthony Booker prayed the Morning Prayer. Parish Concerns and Welcome to Visitors was done by Stephen Holmes. Scripture Lessons were read by Willard Douglas and Terry Mallory. The speaker, Robert L. “Bobby” Vaughan, was introduced by Vaughan Moss.  Coach Vaughan spoke about the need, for the church, to use extraordinary methods to reach the most troubled of youth. He went on to say that most efforts are aimed at some selected men, mainly those in church, with problems; however, we are missing the grass root young men – those on street corners; those without fathers or father figures; and drug sellers and abusers.  Professor Vaughan stressed the point of churches having more purposeful outreach programs that touch the lives of our most difficult and troubled young men.

Berry Kemp and William Green were in charge of the Men’s Day offering.  Closing remarks were made by Gilbert Ingram, Vice-President of UMM; and Rev. R. M. Hunter, Pastor of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church.
