Many modern leaders tend to focus more on their personal goals than group orientaion towards accomplishment. Every good leader cares about the people he(she) serves and makes certain the successor has smooth transition into the new position.
It is vitally important that the people are confident and aware of the strength of their new leader before he(she) takes office. Moses clearly demonstrated to Israel that Joshua was highly qualified for the task, which was good for Joshua and the people.
