REBECCA’S WELL:   Moses’ Complaint to the Lord

“And Moses said unto the Lord, Wherefore hast thou afflicted thy servant?  and wherefore have I not found favor in thy sight, that thou layest the burden of all this people upon me?”

Have I conceived all this people? have I begotten them, that thou shouldest say unto me, Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing father (mother) bareth the sucking child, unto the land which thou swearest unto their fathers? Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they weep unto me, saying, Give us flesh, that we may eat. I am not able to bear all this people alone, because it is too heavy for me.

And if thou deal thus with me, kill me, if I have found favor in thy sight; and let me not see my wretchedness.” The Lord knows how much we can bear; though the load gets heavy, we’re never left alone to bare it all.  If we are willing, He will help us.

In utter frustration, Moses had lashed out at God, who did help by giving the seventy elders to officiate over the people God demonstrated that Moses had, all along, the power equal to the burden by taking the Spirit that was upon Moses and resting it upon the seventy.

“There was no more power than before – only more machinery.  God had simply distributed the burden” (Scofield Bible, p. 182).

The Holy Bible reminds us that “unto whom much is given, much is required”.  God has placed certain souls in this universe to move the civilization along  –  religionists, philosophers, poets, artists, scientists, teachers, builders of men, women, boys and girls and communities.  Our Father always gives strength for the toil and He promises reward to the faithful at the end of life’s day.
