Pastor's Corner (63)

In this column I want to merely touch upon “The Purpose” of the church building and our bodies and how we’re to treat them. Please note that I said merely touch upon because I certainly cannot exhaust all that I would want to share with you in just one short newspaper column. What’s “The Purpose” of the physical church building, facility, structure or edifice, and why have I chosen to address this issue at this time you might ask?

While there are several biblical passages which make it quite clear that we are to honor our parents, both of them, our fathers and mothers, I decided to place a special emphasis on our mothers for this particular column because this is Mother’s Day weekend, and besides, I wrote a two-part column about not forgetting our fathers just a couple of weeks ago that ran in this newspaper. Yes, by all means, honor our fathers and our mothers, but in this column the focus will be on our mothers. To all the real mothers out there … I love, respect, and honor YOU!

I wonder if I’ll ever learn my lesson pursuant to taking on some of the most seemingly difficult inquiries in life. You see, so many people seek me out for answers to rather tuff questions. That said, here I go once again launching out into the deep. Last week at the passing and homegoing of one of my first cousins, his surviving mother asked me if it was written in the Bible someplace where it says: “Weep when a child is born and rejoice when a saint (i.e., a saved person) dies.”

In this modern day age, many pastors, ministers, and Christians in general are using several different versions of the Holy Bible.  Well, I suppose I’m just a tad bit old-fashioned then.  And while I’m not speaking against the other biblical versions, I do say, “Take Me To The King”.  In this case, I mean The King James version of the Holy Bible.  I’m sticking with King James.

Daughter Connection of Hampton Roads, Inc. (DCHR), in conjunction with the Mount Gilead Missionary Baptist Church Health Ministry, sponsored “A Beam of Hope” Cancer Summit at the church on April 6, 2013. It was an outstanding summit which was very well attended and featured several cancer pertinent presentations, survivor testimonials, and a wealth of cancer statistical data, specific research, and general information.

Last Monday morning as I was reading the Holy Word of God and meditating on it during my “quiet time” with him, and somewhat thinking of what my next “Pastor’s Corner” column focus would be, the Holy Spirit spoke to my spirit. I was also at that same time revisiting a powerful message I had heard at a local church on Resurrection Sunday entitled: “From Religion To Relationship.”

As you probably discerned from my subject or title, I had a few more things I wanted to share with you from last week’s Pastor’s Corner column, so I’ve continued it here in this issue as “Don’t Forget Our Fathers” – Part II. I began this piece last week by addressing the fact that many of our sports heroes and superstar athletes, both men and women, but perhaps more so men, have a tendency to say “Hi Mom” immediately after accomplishing some great athletic feat on television with the cameras focused on them at that moment. And while that’s fine, my only displeasure with it is why does it have to be an expression of “Hi Mom” and hardly ever or very rarely, “Hi Dad?”

Have you ever heard the expression “Hi Mom” while viewing television programs? Perhaps you have. In this particular format, it usually comes from the mouths and lips of professional, collegiate, and otherwise amateur athletes who just performed some major feat considered to be outstanding and exciting during a televised sporting event.

“Togetherness Breeds Happiness” … you think…just maybe? Perhaps that’s something many, many more of us should think about and seriously consider going forward in our beloved country of America. I believe that we can do better and more together than we can separately or a part. What about you?

Have you ever been ripped-off by any companies, businesses, or stores, or did you just think that it was your imagination? Well, I’m here to assure you that it’s not your imagination in many if not most instances. I have personally found this “rip-off” practice especially true during economically difficult times. “Customer Service Rip-offs Are Unnecessary,” but not only that, they’re also highly unfair, unethical, and immoral practices perpetrated upon honest and innocent customers who patronize certain establishments whether we’re experiencing economically difficult times or not.
