Area Churches To Host 42nd Regional ABCOTS Meeting

HAMPTON ROADS

     The 42nd Annual Session of the American Baptist Churches of the South (ABCOTS) will convene April 24-27, 2012 at the Sheraton Norfolk Waterside Hotel in Norfolk, Virginia.  Over 600 delegates from member churches in sixteen southern states and the District of Columbia will worship and study together under the leadership of prominent clergy and accomplished laypersons throughout the nation.

     The session opens on Tuesday evening, April 24, 2012 at 8:00 p.m. with a pre-convention musical featuring a mass choir of singers from local churches.  Dr. W. Marcus Small, Pastor, New Calvary Baptist Church in Norfolk, Virginia is the coordinator of the Tuesday evening event.  

     Each evening at 8:00 p.m. worship services will be held.  The public is invited.  The convention preachers are Dr. James M. Harrison, Main Street Baptist Church, Smithfield, Virginia; Dr. Leonard N. Smith, Mount Zion Baptist Church, Arlington, Virginia and Dr. Todd Davidson, Piney Grove Baptist Church, Virginia Beach, Virginia. Other convention speakers are Rev. Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd and Dr. Debra Haggins.  Rev. Dr. Jeffrey L. Reeves, Pastor, Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Petersburg, Virginia will teach the daily Bible Study using this year’s theme, “One Body United in Christ.”

     Friday, April 27, 2012 is Christian Education Day.  Five equipment and empowerment classes will be offered:  Christian Education from a Teaching Perspective, Great Hymns of the Church, Who Helps the Helper, The Mentoring Heart of a Christian Woman, and Why Planned Gifts? 

     Interested persons can register as day visitors and enroll in a morning and/or afternoon class.  Register at www.abcots.org/conference.

     ABCOTS, headquartered in Baltimore, MD, is one of the regions in the American Baptist Churches, USA.  There are 240 churches and more than 300,000 persons who comprise of and minister in the region.  Dr. Walter L. Parrish, II is the executive director.
