In last week’s “Pastor’s Corner” column, I began writing about “The Importance of Education and Scholarship” from two perspectives, but my primary focus was on secularism. In this column, however, and as previously promised, I will write on the same subject but focus on the people’s choice of spirituality or the spiritual way of doing things, rather than the secular way.

We find in Saint Matthew 7:13-14, where people are presented with two ways or two choices resulting in their permanent destinations. They can either choose the wide gate and broad way which leadeth to destruction, or they can choose the strait gate and narrow way which leadeth unto everlasting life. Unfortunately, most people tend to choose the broad way. Our Lord Jesus Christ said only a few people find and take advantage of the strait gate and narrow way. These two ways or two choices lend themselves mostly to what I like to refer to as the spiritual way verses the secular way.

I trust that you got something from last week’s piece as I wrote about the secular way. Now, let me share briefly about the spiritual way that leadeth to eternal life from a perspective pursuant to the importance of what it means to acquire a biblical education, wisdom, knowledge, and understanding. Do you not know that one can read the holy scriptures, diligently, until s/he becomes blue in the face, and yet fail to get an accurate and meaningful understanding of those scriptures, s/he hasn’t accomplished very much at all. We must first understand and believe what is written … and then practice it. Faith without works (action) is dead, or is of no real good.

From the spiritual perspective, we must apply to our lives what we read in the Holy Bible so that we can please God in our daily walk. We must understand, believe, and accept the fact that all of us have been born with a godly-purpose in this life; not merely for secular living purposes, but for spiritual living as well. Our very purpose for being born into this world in the first place, was and still is, to live in such a manner that we bring pleasure, glory, and honor to Almighty God Jehovah. In a nutshell as it were, there it is! Ladies and gentlemen, that is why you and I were born on planet earth. So don’t get it twisted! As practicing Christians (true believers), it’s not at all about us, it’s all about God and living so that we please and bring him glory.

Let me conclude this two-part series by saying once more that acquiring a quality education is very important all right, in the secular and spiritual realms; do get wisdom, knowledge, and understanding, but put God first in all that we do here and now and beyond.  So let’s not take “The Importance of Education and Scholarship too lightly. Again, Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom; and with all thy getting get understanding.”
