PASTOR’S CORNER: Take Me To The King

Elder Gerald DeForest TylerBy Elder Gerald DeForest Tyler

In this modern day age, many pastors, ministers, and Christians in general are using several different versions of the Holy Bible.  Well, I suppose I’m just a tad bit old-fashioned then.  And while I’m not speaking against the other biblical versions, I do say, “Take Me To The King”.  In this case, I mean The King James version of the Holy Bible.  I’m sticking with King James.

“Be Who You Are”

Elder Gerald DeForest TylerBy Elder Gerald DeForest Tyler

Last Monday morning as I was reading the Holy Word of God and meditating on it during my “quiet time” with him, and somewhat thinking of what my next “Pastor’s Corner” column focus would be, the Holy Spirit spoke to my spirit. I was also at that same time revisiting a powerful message I had heard at a local church on Resurrection Sunday entitled: “From Religion To Relationship.”

Jesus Christ shed His blood for the redemption of humanity. We think of Jesus Christ as our intercessor and that He mediates on our behalf before God the Father. Recognition of our sins can create guilt, the need to be forgiven, overwhelming fear and we may feel the need to change our behavior patterns. As we read the scriptures we learn that Jesus Christ gave Himself as a sacrificial offering, once and for all, for our sins. In the beginning of Hebrews 9, the author discusses the worship practices God ordained such as giving the Israelites instructions for building the Tabernacle which traveled with them as they journeyed to the Promised Land. Christ did not take the blood of goats and bulls to offer as a sacrifice; He took His own blood and obtained eternal salvation for us. He became a perfect sacrifice to God. His blood purified our lives from useless rituals so that we may serve God in an acceptable manner.

There is a term that’s used quite frequently in this contemporary society to describe a condition, and it is “diversity.” But what exactly is this social phenomenon called “diversity?”

As a concept it allows for a number of things including: “differences, disagreement, distinction and assortment.” In reference to people the above descriptions would have an array of applications, i.e. differences might refer to races or ethnic persuasions. It could just as well be referring to differences in faiths or beliefs such as those that exists between Judaism, Christianity, Al-Islam, Sikhism, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc.

PASTOR’S CORNER: “Life Goes On”

Elder Gerald DeForest TylerBy Elder Gerald DeForest Tyler

I’ve heard it said that if and when one loses her or his health, you really don’t have anything left. Well, I and many others who attended the recently held Second Annual MTB Cancer Foundation Fashion Show and Extravaganza at the Wyndham Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach are all here to tell you that you still have life, and that “Life Goes On” even after one’s health sometimes fail. This fact is important in both the secular and spiritual realm of things. In spite of the health concerns and issues that we may face in this life, we should endeavor to persevere and live on for as long as possible. And also while in this life, we should make the most important decision of them all and that is to spend eternal life in God’s Kingdom once our earthly or natural life has come to an end.

Last week I began a two-part “Pastor’s Corner” column by expressing my support for the content of President Barack Obama’s recent “State of the Union” address, of which I perceived that his overall theme certainly could have been that of “Let’s Fix It” as far as America is concerned, and let’s do it now! I said that our country is in many ways broken and in need of fixing.

Jesus often taught with a parable to reveal the knowledge of the secrets of the Kingdom of heaven to His disciples and to others (Matthew 13:10-16). Teaching by a parable was an assurance of spiritual understanding to all of Israel. Even today we find these illustrations extremely helpful. Why is this story important to Christian growth? How can we prepare ourselves for God’s harvest? Jesus tells us that the Kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field. While everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away. After the wheat sprouted, then the weeds appeared.

PASTOR’S CORNER: “Let’s Fix It”

Elder Gerald DeForest TylerBy Elder Gerald DeForest Tyler

In the beginning, America was founded and established upon biblical and Christian principles hundreds of years ago by our founding fathers. The Bible itself was written to and for Christians. However, sinners need to also hear the “Word of God” in order to possess or acquire the necessary faith that is required to become Christians. The Bible says that “faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God” (Romans 10:17).

It was obvious that Paul wrote this letter during a difficult time of his ministry to the Corinthians. Strong attacks were made against Paul as he longed for spiritual reconciliation and expressed great joy when this occurred. Paul thanked God, our merciful father, from whom all help comes.
