Bridge Corner: August 10, 2017

Hello and welcome to the Tidewater Bridge Unit (TBU).

Competitive Bidding — Part A

The next few articles will be on competitive bidding and we start with the overcall and advancing the overcall. Why overcall you ask; to compete for the contract as the hand may belong to us. Overcalling may help partner get off to the right lead to defeat declarer, or perhaps it may aid partner in sacrificing if the opponents get to game or slam when vulnerability is favorable.

We start with suit quality: a good five card suit headed by two of the top three or three of the top five honors. For a six card or longer suit, this may be relaxed slightly.

Hand strength: 7-17 HCP for a one level overcall and 13-17 HCP to overcall at the two level. Your RHO opens 1♥ and holding this 13 point hand ♠A76-♥KJ5-♦QJ65-♣Q76 you must pass as there is no five card suit and you’re not strong enough to overcall 1NT and the takeout double is not appropriate.

Your partner (the advancer) responds to your overcall with 6-9 HCP and support by:
• Raising to the two level with three card support
• Raising to the three level with four support (preemptive)
• Raising to game with five card or longer support (preemptive)
• Without support and 6-9 he can bid his own five card suit at the one level or with 11 HCP bid his five card or longer suit at the two level
• Holding ten or more points and support advancer starts with a cue-bid of the opponent’s suit to indicate an interest in reaching game.

This basic approach to overcalling and advancing the overcall leads us to this excellent contract.

Both vulnerable. West deals.

South, Assessing the situation, needs ten tricks and upon Browsing his checklist, has four losers if the trump suit cooperates, but must Consider the order, drawing trumps before discarding a loser on the spade honor. These are the ABC’s of declarer’s plan.
