Beach Omegas Host 4th Domestic Violence Breakfast

VIRGINIA BEACH
More than 150 guests took advantage of a brisk but sunny day to attend the Gamma Xi Uplift Foundation’s fourth “Stop the Violence Breakfast” at the Holiday Inn Virginia Beach-Norfolk Hotel and Conference Center in Virginia Beach on January 27. News anchor, Anita Blanton of WAVY TV 10 served as the emcee.

A diverse panel of eight addressed the all-important topic of domestic violence “through different lenses,” offering a variety of perspectives. The panel included social worker, Tanya Carroll and Alan Jim, a retired Navy man. Both made impassioned presentations about each of their experiences as survivors of domestic abuse.

Lee Anne Storey, a 911 operator in Va. Beach described what takes place when calls for assistance come in. Forensic Nurse, Elizabeth Walters explained what happens when victims come to an emergency room, along with the all-important follow-up procedures. Detectives Cynthia Santiago and Tricia Shelton of the Va. Beach Police Department discussed the domestic violence investigation process.

Nikki Duncan-Talley, Community Outreach Coordinator for the H.E.R. Shelter in Portsmouth gave the purpose for the event and outlined services provided by her facility. Robin Gauthier, the Executive Director for Samaritan House in Va. Beach did the same. Additionally, Gauthier led a tribute to the late Brooke Briggs, Samaritan House’s Major Gifts Officer.

Briggs was a strong supporter of the Stop the Violence Breakfasts. Following their presentations, the eight fielded questions from the audience in a panel discussion.

Promoting the inspired theme of “kNOw More,” this event seeks to increase awareness, educate and empower members of our community to act in ending domestic violence.

At the conclusion of the program, the GXUF made donations of $1000 each to Samaritan House and the H.E.R. shelter. The foundation also presented its GXUF Uplift Awards to survivors Tonya Carroll and Alan Jim.

The Gamma Xi Uplift Foundation’s overall mission is to provide service, mentorship and leadership that uplifts the greater Hampton Roads, and is a 501(c)(3) entity of Gamma Xi Chapter, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
