NORFOLK
Passion in the community is at an all-time high. But how do citizens in Norfolk turn that energy into action?

Engage Norfolk seeks to answer that question. An event planned for February 12 from 1 – 5 p.m. at the Academy for Discovery at Lakewood will include workshops on how to be a more effective citizen lobbyist, opportunities to team up with local organizations who share your values, and much more.

“This event will provide a means for individuals to channel their energy into making a positive change in Norfolk and beyond,” said Norfolk city councilwoman Andria McClellan, one of the organizers of the event.

Engage Norfolk is also being organized by Pilot Media publication AltDaily.com. “It is time for everyone who cares to move their activism up a click,” said AltDaily editor Jesse Scaccia. “We are all called to action.”

New Journal and Guide has signed on as a partner. Brenda H. Andrews, publisher of the New Journal and Guide, said, “Democracy always begins at the grassroots level with locally informed and mobilized citizens and goes up. It doesn’t come from the top down.”

The event is free and open to the public. The YMCA will be providing child care services on site for parents who would like to attend. Volunteer Hampton Roads is on board as a partner in helping local citizens find ways to use their time and skills for the greater good.
